A lot of the talks I give these days are to audiences of a certain age but one of the things I am constantly struck by is the amazing vitality and energy of many of even the oldest people I encounter. I was giving a talk to a Leisure Club in Caton, near Lancaster, this week and among the audience was a 90-year old lady, who was heading off after the meeting for her regular stint rowing on the River Lune. Was she the cox, I wondered? Not a bit of it, she was the stroke of a four or eight, depending on the numbers who turned up. The river was high after weeks of torrential rain, but she told me the only time they don’t go out is when the river is flooding the landing stage, making it impossible to get in the boats.
If that was impressive enough, even more astonishing was the 96 year-old gentleman who had just completed a high-speed run down the longest zip-line in Britain to raise funds for a charity he supports. I left Caton amazed and inspired by them both.
